The Israeli-Palestinian conflict dates back to the end of the nineteenth century, with the United Nations adopting Resolution 181 in 1947 to divide Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. In 1948, the State of Israel was created, sparking the first Arab-Israeli War. Tensions rose in the region, particularly between Israel and Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. The Six-Day War began in 1967, leading to Israel gaining territorial control over the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights. The Yom Kippur War or October War followed, resulting in Egypt and Syria negotiating over previously ceded territory.
