India Beats Sri Lanka to win the Asia Cup for the Eighth Time

India defeated Sri Lanka handily in the Asia Cup 2023 championship match on Sunday, first restricting the hosts to only 50 runs before launching an aggressive chase to win their eighth Asia Cup championship.

Indian openers Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill wasted little time in reaching the target runs in 6.1 overs, helping the Men in Blue win the ninth Asia Cup title. Gill and Kishan each scored 27 runs, a difference of 23 runs. This is India's seventh Asia Cup (ODI) title and eighth overall.

The hosts chose to bat first earlier in the day after winning the toss, but India's Mohammad Siraj completely destroyed them by taking six wickets, four of which came in a single over, while only giving up 21 runs.

Dushan Hemantha and Kusal Mendis became the only Sri Lankan batsmen to reach double digits. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah took three and one wickets, while Siraj's six-wicket haul allowed Sri Lanka to be bowled out for 50 runs in 15.2 overs.

The match began with a 40-minute delay due to rain. However Sri Lankan team’s batting order collapsed after 15.2 overs, with Kusal Perera removed by Jasprit Bumrah. India's Mohammad Siraj misled Sri Lankan hitters and ended his five-over spell.

Since Bangladesh previously held the record with 87 runs against Pakistan back in 2000, Sri Lanka's 51-run goal is the lowest total in Asia Cup (ODI) history. A virtually full crowd was dismayed by Sri Lanka's pitifully low score in the 50-over match after seeing only 116 minutes of action.

For his outstanding match-winning effort, India's Siraj was named Man of the Match. Meanwhile, India's Kuldeep Yadav bagged the Player of the Tournament award. The tournament's leading scorer was Shubman Gill of India.
